Our History

Renown HistoryIn 1862, Washoe Clinic was founded to treat victims of smallpox during the Comstock Lode silver boom.

Two years later, Nevada achieved statehood and debuted the opening of Washoe County Hospital, later to be named Washoe Medical Center. It was then transferred in 1984 to the newly created Washoe Health System, a private, not-for-profit corporation.

Fast-forward to 2006 when we became Renown Health, a private, not-for-profit organization: though our name change was a significant decision, we’re proud to maintain the same level of dedication and commitment to providing the highest level of quality healthcare to our community.
